Dear Mom

Hey Mama. Yes, I’m talking to you. It’s been one heck of a year, to say the least. When you decided to be a mom, I’m guessing that you didn't factor in parenting during a pandemic. Me either. We may have chosen a different path! I kid, I kid. Despite being a hard year trying to balance everything that life threw at us, we pulled through. Not only did we pull through – we excelled. At the time it surely didn’t seem like it (for me anyway). I struggled hard. The chaos, exhaustion, and panic that I felt so frequently put me in a place I had never been. My happy, fun-loving personality did a 180. But as I look back at this last year I’m able to put things in perspective a bit more.

I think in most instances, it was the Mom in the family that felt the brunt of the pandemic. In fact, studies actually show that it was moms who were the ones leaving their jobs to stay home with the kids while the father continued working. Certainly not the case in every family though. Do you ever step back and wonder why it was us mamas who took the reigns? Why we were the ones to juggle the cleaning, the teaching, the cooking and for some of us, the career as well? (Side note: My husband is absolutely incredible and was a rock through this past year and I am in no way saying that Dads did not step up their game).

Moms. Are. Superheroes. That’s why we took the reigns. I’m pretty sure it’s just embedded in our DNA. I remember my husband offering to do things and I kindly turned away his offer to help. Dinner? Nah, I’ve got it. Second grade math help? Nope – step aside. Painting the kitchen cabinets white? I’ll do it myself thank you. Ok, maybe I’m the extreme control freak, but I know there’s some of that resonating in you as well. If you’re a mom you know what I’m talking about. We want help, but the bigger part of us would rather do it ourselves, our way, the right way (?).

So getting back to last year. The year of the pandemic. The year our skillset was greatly broadened. It’s almost like the universe was trying to test the power of a mother. It tried testing our strength. Our mental capacity. Our ability to multitask. Our patience. Oh man did it test our patience. But hey mama, check us out now. Look back on what you accomplished last year and give yourself one big pat on the back. Not only did you get through (quite possibly) the hardest year you’ll ever live – but you came out on top.

You’re more resilient.

You’ve got more patience.

Your multitasking skills are ON. POINT.

You’ve made so many memories with your family.

You now know that the Statue of Liberty is made from copper.

You are Mom 2.0.

So thank you for everything you have done – last year, the prior years, and the years to come. To the Moms, Stepmoms, Grandmothers, Godmothers, Aunts, and every other mama-type out there – you are truly amazing. And while we celebrate Mother’s Day only once a year, it is important that we look at one another and celebrate each other every single day. We’re on this wild ride of motherhood together, and there’s no place I’d rather be.

xoxo
